Warwickshire 1st Team v Staffordshire - Sunday 2nd July - Olton Golf Club
Our 3rd game of the season against Staffordshire at Olton Golf Club which is renowned for it's quick greens and tricky pins.
The team for this fixture was:-
Rob Bardsley (Moor Hall)
Harrison Long (Moor Hall)
Matt Cryer (Coventry)
Tom Ibbertson (Hearsall)
Darryl Gwilliam (Coventry)
Nick Brooker (Olton)
Stu Bloxam (Hearsall)
Ian Smith (The Warwickshire)
Gary Skipp (Robin Hood)
Luke Allen (Olton)
First out for Warwickshire was the Moor Hall pairing of Rob Bardsley and Harrison Long. Neither side could pull away with the match being even for the majority of the round until the 18th where Warwickshire found themselves 1 down.
Second out for Warwickshire was Matt Cryer and Tom Ibbertson who seemed to be in control all the way round but again found themselves all square on the last tee. After seeing the oppo hook their tee shot OB Tom opted for the 2 iron up the right, par was good enough good enough to secure our first point of the morning.
Third out was Darry and local lad Nick. Even Nick with plenty of years of golf at Olton under his belt struggled to give Darryl lines off the tee. That being said and few shots that were completely unfamiliar to Nick saw our guys cruise to 7&5 victory.
Fourth pairing for Warwickshire was Ian and Stu who were down early on and could never quite get it back, 3&2 loss.
Last out was Luke and Gary Skipp, despite being up early on thier opposition found some form and got their noses comfortably in front. Another loss for Warwickshire. 3-2 down at lunch left us a bit of work to do in the singles.
Out first for Warwickshire was Rob Bardsley, had we only been playing 9 holes we would have had our first point of the afternoon, unfortunately this was not the case. Staffordshire's number 1 come back at Rob on the back 9 and was stood on the 17th tee all square. Warwickshire narrowly losing the first game 1 down.
Darryl out second for us, after chipping in for eagle on the 390 yard par 4 he found himself 2 up, some more impressive golf seen him 4 up after 11. Staffs number 2 gave Darryl a scare reducing the scoreline to only 1 up after the 18th.
Nick Brooker out 3 for Warwickshire found himself in very close match, going all the way to the 18th Nick found himself victorious.
Warwickshire looking like they could turn the game on its head.
Our 4th point came from Harrison Long, some very solid golf golf the job done. A 2 up win for Harrison.
Tom,Luke, Matt and Gary all up against it knowing we need something out of their games to keep our hopes alive. Unfortunately all 4 came up short giving Staffordshire the 8 points they needed to secure the match.
Our final 2 games, Stu and Ian both secured their points with a 4&3 and 6&5 victory.
Overall match score - 8-7 Staffordshire. So close but yet so far for Warwickshire.
I would like to thank all the Warwickshire players on what was a very tough day, made even tougher by some very tricked up greens.
As ever, a big thank you to Mark and Deb for their continued support, also, to John Duncombe who made an appearance at his home club.
With the league now out of reach, our efforts are now concentrated on the 6's at Belton Park on the 15th July where hopefully we will find ourselves going through to finals.
