Men's 1st Team v Derbyshire Report

The final match of the season seen us take on top of the league at Moor Hall.

The team taking on Derbyshire:

Harrison Long

Rob Bardsley

Darryl Gwilliam

Stu Bloxam

Ian Smith

Will Bailey

Cam Bridger

Tom Cleaton

Nick Brooker

Gary Skipp

Kicking off the day was the Moor Hall pairing of Rob and Harrison. Going 2 up early on things were looking promising. Their opponents found some good form late on in the and managed hold our duo to a half.

Second pairing for Warwickshire was Nick and Darryl. Last time these two played together they cruised to a 7&6 victory. Some more of that wouldn't go a miss. This time around it wasn't quite the 7&6 but it was a 2&1 win for Warwickshire.

Skippy and Stu our third pairing, struggling from the off against a birdie blitz from Derby. 5 birdies in the first 6 meant they had their work cut out. The birdies slowed down momentarily but a couple more gave Derbyshire the win.

Cam and Tom Cleaton out number 4. An up and down game, these games often go in favour of the home team but not this time. They suffered a 2&1 loss.

Final pairing of the morning was local lad Will Bailey and Ian Smith. Needing a point to avoid another morning foursomes defeat the pressure was on. Some fine golf from the Warwickshire pairing meant they was almost in before our first pairing. A terrific 5&4 win.

This put the scores at 2.5/2.5 for the morning. Everything to play for in the afternoon.

Leading the way was Darryl who was looking to finish off a very good first season of Warwickshire golf. Going up early on in his match and keeping his foot on the gas gave Warwickshire their first point of the afternoon. Following Darryl we had Harrison, Rob and Nick. The two home boys bringing in some very impressive points (5&4 and 8&6) Nick trying not to be left in the distance also pulled out a 5&4 win. The Top 4 games all going Warwickshire's way we only needed 1.5 more points to seal the win. Following Nick was Cam, he was playing a very fired up Derby captain who pulled out all the stops in the closing holes. 2 birdies in the last 3 was enough to give Derby the win.

Tom Cleaton out 6th looking to finish his county career with a win before joining the pro ranks. Only 1 hole separating the two on the front 9, Derby turned it on around the back 9 and secured another point for the away team. Another local lad out next in the form of Will Bailey, again, nothing between Will and his opponent on the front 9 but like the game before him, Derby with another clutch back 9 gave them another much needed point. After dominating the top end of the singles we needed only 1 point to secure a half. Could Skippy secure that point.... absolutely, a fantastic 5&4 win put Warwickshire on 7.5

So... just a half from the last 2 games would be good enough. Unfortunately Ian and Stu would fall short of the mark. With the game tied Derby needed other results to go their way to secure the league.

Thank you to everyone who has played over the course of the season. Your support his hugely appreciated. A big thank you to Mark, Deb and Pete. Your efforts and continued support make captaining the team a pleasure.
