Despite the recent warm and sunny weather a rather gloomy morning greeting the players to Edgbaston golf club for this years Senior Championships. Not even the grey clouds could take away from the magnificent condition the Edgbaston golf course was in. It really was as pretty as a picture with stripes and contours everywhere. We were all to be treated to a fabulous day.
In a first for Warwickshire, the Ladies and the Men had their championships on the same day. The ladies led the way in the morning with the men starting in the afternoon. It was great to see so many players together. The report on the Ladies Championship results will follow shortly.
The course was proving a difficult challenge for all, rewarding the good shots but punishing any player who would miss on the wrong side of the flag or get out of position.
The Cyril Jewsbury Shield (Aged 70+) was secured by Andrew Carmen, another trophy to add to his many over the years for Warwickshire. The Carl Bretherton Salver (Aged 65 - 69) would go to Paul Chapman from Sutton Coldfield, playing in his first county senior event he would handle the conditions well for his 79. The Jim Dean Cup (Aged 60 - 64) winner for 2024 would be Simon Timmins, his 73 would be good enough for 3rd place on the day overall. John Lawrence's 75 would get his name on the Directors cup for 2024 (Aged 55 - 59) and Pete Gordon's nett 69 on the day would make him the Bill Dudley Evans Salver champion for the year.
It the Overall Championship, Tim Cooley would end the day in 3rd position with Sean Young's in the runners up spot, his 72 on the day just one off the winning score of the day.
The win would go to Warren Bladon, a solid 71 in what was a difficult setup on the day.
A massive thank you to David and Claudia at Edgbaston golf club for all their efforts in making the joint hosting with the Ladies happen and for all the help throughout the lead up to the event. The course was presented wonderfully and our thanks also go to all the course team for efforts and great touches (hole paining) which made the day extra special.
The starters for the day, Peter Smith and Roger Dancey (both members of Edgbaston GC) ensured all our players were ready and relaxed on the 1st tee for what can be a daunting tee shot. Thank you so much for giving up your time to help, the players and championship committee really appreciate it.
Lastly thanks to our two tournament referees, Phil Croft and Nick Coleman, who supported the Ladies and Men throughout the whole day on the course and to the Warwickshire Golf Union President Stuart Bloxham, who supported the players throughout the day.
