Under 16s Suffer Defeat to Staffordshire
After our success in the friendly match against Leicestershire & Rutland 3 weeks earlier, our U16s team travelled to Westwood GC on 14th July for our first league match of the campaign. This was a new venue for all our players and it turned out to be a big home advantage to the Staffordshire boys.
Due to the unavailability of several of our regular players, it gave opportunities to some new players at U16s level. The selected team was:
Kamraan Arastu (Copt Heath)
Oliver Camargo-Jones (Coventry GC)
Charlie England (Coventry)
Jake Frearson (Nuneaton)
Oscar Gill (Ladbrook Park)
Edward Hayle (Rugby)
William Paget (Coventry)
Harry Walton (Moor Hall)
All these boys will continue to be eligible for U16s golf next year, so it was definitely a youthful side! After our pre match get together the match began. The pairings and order for the following foursomes were as follows:
1. Ollie & Oscar
2. Kamraan & Harry
3. Jake & Edward
4. William & Charlie
The boys all faired well, given the lack of course knowledge, and all the matches reached at least the 16th green. As we all know, the difference between a narrow defeat and a narrow victory can boil down to a critical putt or fortune going for or against you. Unfortunately, the golfing gods were against us and the more experienced Staffordshire team narrowly won all four matches.
We had lunch and then went out for the singles, knowing we needed a strong performance. The afternoon singles pretty much mirrored the morning foursomes with 7 of the matches reaching at least the 16th green (5 matches going to the 17th or 18th). Sadly, we only managed 1 win and a half in the afternoon - well done Edward and Ollie
On paper this looks like a heavy defeat but, on another day and a bit of good fortune for Warwickshire, the result could have been oh so different in our favour. As I said earlier, all 8 boys will continue to be eligible for U16s next year and so this experience will put them in good stead.
As always, thanks to Westwood GC for hosting the match, Staffordshire for their hospitality and our parents for getting the lads to the course and supporting on the day. Our next match is on 11th August against Worcestershire at Stratford Park where we will be looking to bounce back.
