The first event in the Stableford Series was played last Sunday at Sutton Coldfield Golf Club on a warm and sunny day.
With some very good scores coming in, the winner of the 18 hole Sylvia Evans salver was Lily Knee (Leamington & County GC) with an outstanding score of 43 points! With the last year being very busy for her with GCSEs, Lily has worked extremely hard at her game over the winter and we were delighted for her.
The winner of the 9 hole Sylvia Evans salver was Emilia Sadler (Moor Hall GC) with an excellent score of 19 points. Well done Emilia, a great start to the season!
Full report of the day below
Although it was a welcome warm and sunny day, the course was playing very long and with preferred lies in play, the scores of every one of the girls was impressive.
19 girls entered the competition, but with 3 girls not well on the day, overall numbers were a little lower. Nine played 18 holes and following Lily's wonderful, well deserved 43 points, the runner up was Jessica Davies (The Warwickshire Golf & Country Club) with a very good 35 points, closely followed by Arisha Virik (Kenilworth GC) with 34 points. In 4th place was Amelie Stead (Moor Hall GC) with 29 points.
3 played in the 9 hole competition off the Purple Tees and following Emilia Sadler's (Moor Hall GC) excellent 19 points, runner up was Georgina Priestley (Stratford on Avon GC) with 14 points.
In the Futures competition, 2 without WHS handicaps played 9 holes and the winner was Sofia Giaquinto (Edgbaston GC) with 19 points and Annabelle Maybury (Kenilworth GC) was runner up with 12 points. Sofia, I believe has now achieved her WHS handicap!
As very new golfers, 2 played 6 holes and Anaya Sukhija ((Olton GC) just beat Amelia Crawford (Stratford on Avon GC) They were amazing and smiled all the way round!
Six girls played in their first Girls Stableford and received their ‘Warwickshire Bear Brooch'. They were Elly-Mai Brett & Lucy Stone (18 holes) and Amelia Crawford, Sofia Giaquinto, Annabelle Maybury and Anaya Sukhija (Futures)
Our thanks as ever go to Sutton Coldfield Golf Club who have hosted this, our first Stableford of the year, for some time now. We are always so very grateful to be able to hold the competition there as much to due to the reliable course condition but also the welcome that the ladies without fail give to the girls, many who they see returning year after year. With such a young squad at the moment, many will play in this event for at least 6 years. Our thanks go to Brock Harrison who as in previous years, again acted as starter; to the band of helpers, chaperoning the girls on the course and in the clubhouse, without whose help we could not run these events and to Patrick the club professional who runs a ‘7th hole at Pebble Beach Challenge' on the simulator! This year won by Anaya Sukhija, aged 9!
Our particular thanks must go to Sue Foster, Club President and Ruth Watson, Lady Captain. Sue as Ladies Secretary has supported us at this event for many years but having been Club President for the last 2 years retires this year. We very much look to meeting a new Lady Captain next year but really hope we have not seen the last of Sue and Ruth!
I very much look forward to seeing as many as possible in Round 2 of the Stableford Series at Shirley Golf Club on Saturday 6 July and if any lady would like to come and support the girls please get in touch with me.
