A bright day beckoned the Ladies County Championship 2024 on Monday 13th May. Maxstoke Golf Course looked very inviting. Two competitions were being played on the first day: the County Championship qualifying 36 holes and the Silver Division Medal.
Just 12 players were entered for 36 holes stroke play with the leading gross scores going through to the match play knockout.
The Silver Division Medal competition over 18 holes was played by all 28 entrants, the winner being the player with the best net score. Congratulations to Susan Jones from Rugby on her winning of the Silver Division Medal and to Rahela Gordon from Harborne coming runner up.
The overall field this year was down on recent years, very likely due to the removal of the Senior Championship which is now being competed for on the same day as the Men's Senior Championship in July. And unfortunately, there were no clubs in a position to enter the Champion Club Qualifier Competition.
Tuesday 14th May
Matchplay Day 1 was not as bright as the previous one but the 8 ladies who were playing the first round went out in good spirits. The 4 ladies with a bye were able to relax before the afternoon's quarter finals.
Conditions improved in the afternoon and the quarter finalists enjoyed playing at this level. Well done to Serafima Taylor, Deb Reynolds, Branca Gregory and Hannah Coles for making it to the final day.
Thursday 16th May
Semi Finals and Final Day
This was a dull day weatherwise but the 4 semi-finalists were ready for their morning matches. Golf of a very high standard was being played and Serafima Taylor and Hannah Coles went through to the afternoon's Final.
Conditions worsened and a steady rain set in. More golf of a standard most of us only dream about. After a very tight finish, Hannah won by 1 hole. Hannah won her first County Championship in 2003.
The WLCGA is very grateful to Maxstoke Park Golf Club for their support and accommodation with the organisation and running of the County Championship.
