Warwickshire Open 2024 – Championship Report

Walmley Golf Club we be the host venue for the 2024 Warwickshire Open. A 36 hole stroke play event which sees the best male Amateurs and Professionals compete against one another for the Warwickshire Open trophy and title.

In addition to the Open, the T.P Cooke Salver is completed at the Warwickshire Open, a 72 hole aggregate score trophy taking the amateur scores from the Amateur Championships and combining it with their score at the Warwickshire Open.

Walmley looked fantastic, the course was stripped and lush and the new clubhouse was a complete pleasure to spend the day in (as organiser).

It was a cold morning with cloud cover and a gentle breeze, scores would be out there for the players, but accuracy very much in demand all day.

Setting the early pace in round 1 would be Rob Bardsley, our County Captain from Moor Hall.  A bogey down the 1st hole of the day but then a clean card from then on with 4 birdies would total up to a starting 69.

Following Rob in would be his brother Dan, a couple of late bogeys would mean he signed for a 1 under 71.

The course was proving a tough nut to crack and there was a fair wait for the next under par score to be returned.  This would come from Jamie Melton (Nuneaton GC).  His 2 under par 70 contained a treble bogey 7 on Walmley’s notorious 4th hole.  A great score with that considered.

The last under par round of the morning would come from the penultimate group, where the super consistent Nick Brooker (Olton) was again playing some fantastic golf, just the one bogey along with 4 birdies would put Nick joint leader with Rob after round 1.

In the professional ranks, Steve Yates was showing the youngsters the way with a 75.  This would be joint lowest morning round along with Sam Dodds.

So onto the afternoon and with the sun now breaking through and the temperature rising a fair bit, the wind would arrive. Considerably stronger than the mornings play.

Jamie would return a 76 in the afternoon but this was good enough to secure 3rd spot in the Open, Nick would finish his round strong with bridies on 17 and 18, but two bogeys earlier on the back 9 would give Nick an afternoon 73. Securing 2nd place.

So it was Rob Bardsley who would be crowned Warwickshire Open Champion for 2024, with a 71 in the afternoon which would be the lowest score in the conditions, giving Rob a 4 under total for the day.

In the Professional ranks, Sam Dodds with a 71 afternoon score would give him the victory with a 2 over total for the day.  In joint second place for the professionals were Steve Yates and Ryan Burton.

Finally, onto the T.P Cooke Salver, the amateur aggregate trophy for the Amateur and Open Championship.

In 3rd place was Jamie Melton with a total of 295.  2nd place was Dan Bardsley with 294.  The T.P Cooke salver for 2024, was fully deserved by Nick Brooker, who with rounds of 69, 69, 69, 73 showed supreme consistency over the two events, a 2nd place finish in both events.

A huge thank you to Walmley Golf Club for the use of the course for the day which was in fantastic condition.  Also, my personal thanks to Steve Carter who was instrumental in the day running smoothly.

Thanks also go to Felicity Johnson and Mark Reynolds who kindly gave up their time to referees for the Championship on our behalf and to Stuart Bloxham, the Warwickshire Golf Union present who supported the players throughout the day.
