The Boys 4 Counties is an 8 a side round robin event between Gloucestershire, Staffordshire Warwickshire and Worcestershire for the Baldwin-Richards Shield. Normally the event is played in the Easter school break in a singles matchplay format. However, this year's event had to be postponed in April due to the host course, Trentham, being flooded. The event was rearranged for the end of October half-term break and played to a 4 x foursomes format due to potential daylight issues. As a result, this event very much had an end of season feel to it as opposed to the traditional “season openerâ€.
Our team selected for this year's event was:
Monty Fincher (Stratford-on-Avon)
Adam Lovatt (Coventry Hearsall)
Alfie Mitchell (Nuneaton)
Freddy Montgomery (Moor Hall)
Lennon O'Neill Knibbs (Coventry Hearsall)
Charlie Rowledge (Shirley)
Spencer Tanner (Coventry)
Joey Williams (Moor Hall)
Match 1 v Worcestershire
Our pairings for the first match were:
Alfie & Monty
Lennon & Adam
Charlie & Spencer
Joey & Freddy
All 4 games ended up being one-sided affairs with strong wins for Worcestershire in the top 2 matches and strong wins for Team Warwickshire in the bottom 2 matches. As a result, the overall honours were split 2-2. We were still in with a chance of winning the overall event with two wins tomorrow.
Match 2 v Gloucestershire
Gloucestershire had won their first match, so we needed a win in this match to maintain any hope of winning the event. As a result, our pairings and order were shuffled to the following:
Alfie & Lennon
Joey & Freddy
Spencer & Charlie
Adam & Monty
The first and third games mirrored our match against Worcestershire the day before with a heavy defeat in match 1 but a strong win in match 3. Games 2 and 4 were much tighter affairs and we needed the lads to get their noses ahead. Unfortunately, neither pair could get the better of their opponents and both resulted in narrow losses. We were disappointed to now not be able to win the event but had narrowly lost 3-1 to the eventual winners.
Match 3 v Staffordshire
Our final match was against the hosts, Staffordshire who had won one and lost one of their opening matches. A victory for Warwickshire could see us finish in second place. Due to the short turnaround from morning to afternoon we retained the same pairings and order as the Gloucestershire match. Staffordshire quickly took control of the bottom 2 games and so we needed both the Alfie/Lennon and Joey/Freddy pairings to come through for Team Warwickshire. Both these matches went to the 18th but Staffordshire were victorious in game 1 and we secured victory in game 2 - both games being won by 1 hole. As a result, we had lost the match 3-1 and finished bottom of the table.
Thanks to Staffordshire and Trentham GC for hosting this year's event. Particular thanks to Stephen Montgomery for assisting with chaperone duties and to County Chairman, Mark Reynolds, for his support on day 2.
Finally, this is the last Boys event for Lennon, Spencer and Charlie. Similarly regular Boys team players this year Louis Taylor and Ben Storer have also played their last Boys matches. We wish all 5 players all the best as they move up to play Men's golf from 2025.
